A new exhibition takes visitors on an out-of-this world adventure through astronaut training and space exploration.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –– September 19, 2024 –– The Museum of Science & History today announced the premiere of Mission: Astronaut, a dynamic exhibition that takes visitors on an out-of-this-world adventure through astronaut training and space exploration. Produced by Flying Fish, a leading creator of traveling exhibitions and supported by the science expertise of The DoSeum and the Intrepid Museum, Mission: Astronaut opens on September 21, 2025 and will run through January 5, 2025.
“Any exhibits surrounding astronomy and aeronautics are fan favorites for our visitors, so we’re excited to host Mission: Astronaut,” said Ryan Enger, Curator at MOSH. “Although students may be able to acquire information on space exploration through textbooks and the classroom setting, the hands-on activities provided by Mission: Astronaut more deeply engage them and inspire sharper memories to better retain information.”
Mission: Astronaut is an interactive experience that gives visitors a taste of life as a space explorer. Each section presents tasks that require an astronaut's mindset to solve, using skills like engineering, physics, teamwork, and, most importantly, fun!
"We are thrilled to bring Mission: Astronaut to life in partnership with The DoSeum and the Intrepid Museum. This exhibition embodies our commitment to fostering a love of science, technology, and discovery,” said Jay Brown, Principal & Managing Director of Flying Fish.
“By offering an engaging hands-on experience that sparks curiosity, we hope to inspire a new generation of space enthusiasts and innovators."
As visitors enter the exhibition, they’ll meet the Astronaut Guides—fictional astronauts with skills ranging from engineering to health science. As guests travel through the ‘Science in Space’ section they will glimpse into the world of space research, learning the impacts of space on plant growth, human health and Earth science.
The adventure continues for visitors as they will experience the technological wonders of space operations firsthand in the ‘Space Operations’ section. From piloting a robotic arm to exploring the intricate process of designing a spacesuit, visitors will gain insights into the essential technologies that make space exploration possible.
The ‘Future of Space Exploration’ section offers a glimpse into potential space habitats and future missions. Visitors will have the chance to reflect on the future of space exploration and select a mission. It's a thought-provoking and interactive experience that encourages contemplation on the next frontier in space exploration.
