JACKSONVILLE, FL (March 01, 2025) – Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville is joining healthcare providers and Jacksonville advocates to recognize March as Colon Cancer Awareness Month. This annual observance aims to raise awareness about colorectal cancer, encourage screenings, and promote preventive measures that can save lives.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosis in both men and women in the US. It is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.
Even though we don't know the exact cause of most colorectal cancers, we do know it’s possible to prevent many colorectal cancers. Risk factors that you can control include diet, weight, and physical activity. It’s also vital that people who notice symptoms that include blood in the toilet do not ignore these warning signs.
“We want to remind everyone that colon cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable when caught early,” said Dr. Victoria Findley, Medical Director at Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville (VIMJAX). VIMJAX provides medical care for working adults who are without health insurance, and colon cancer screening is among VIMJAX’s most recommended tests. “Screening is crucial, especially for those over 45 or with a family history of colorectal cancer. Simple tests, such as colonoscopies or stool-based tests, can detect cancer at an early stage or even prevent it altogether.”
Findley explains that regular screening prevents colorectal cancer by finding abnormal growths so they can be removed before they have a chance to turn into cancer. She recommends that everyone talk with their health care provider about their personal risk. “For people at average risk of colon and rectal cancer, the American Cancer Society recommends starting regular screening at age 45. But it's vital to know your own level of risk based on your family history. Colon cancer is preventable.”
