Jazz in the Afternoon to feature Ryan Little and Students of the John Lumpkin Institute

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville (MOCA), a cultural institute of the University of North Florida, continues its music series, Jazz in the Afternoon, on Sunday, June 8 from 2-4 p.m. This event is presented in partnership with the local John Lumpkin Institute and showcases students from the school with a featured performer.

On June 8, Jazz in the Afternoon will feature Ryan Little. Little began playing classical piano at the age of five, and his interest in it led him to find jazz music in high school. Having many great mentors in high school he grew to want to pursue music professionally and decided to study at the University of North Florida. Since, he has been in the top bands at the school and plays often in and around Jacksonville.

This program takes place in the MOCA Theater and guests can enjoy drinks from the bar, SoulFULL Eats charcuterie "Board in a Box," or treats from Setlan Coffee.  Pre-order is recommended for the "Board in a Box," which can be picked up at the bar the day of the event. Tickets are $10 and include museum admission, so guests are encouraged to explore the museum before or after the performance. Featured exhibitions currently include The Armory South: The 1924 Jacksonville Woman’s Club Exhibition Rediscovered and Jax Contemporary: MOCA Arts Jacksonville Triennial, which features 64 local artists.

 ABOUT THE JL INSTITUTE

Since encouraging his friends in their early 20s to pursue degrees in music, JLI founder, John Lumpkin II has always carried out his passion for teaching. After achieving degrees, awards, and private program recognition, John has continued the tradition of passing on the great wealth of music.

While teaching at his local music programs, such as the Cathedral Arts Project and Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, he has led by example. Thus, his private-study students have been accepted to institutions such as Florida State College at Jacksonville and The Juilliard School.

As a non-profit 501(c)3, the JL Institute is able to give more to the young musicians in Jacksonville, FL, through donation-based lessons, concerts, and masterclasses. The goal is for each student to develop an understanding of their role in music today and how to be effective communicators through the musical story they wish to tell on and off the stage.

ABOUT MOCA JACKSONVILLE

Located in the heart of historic Downtown Jacksonville, the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville is one of the city’s most significant cultural assets. MOCA is the oldest art museum in Northeast Florida and one of the first contemporary art museums to be established in the United States. In 2009, MOCA became a cultural institute of the University of North Florida and in 2025 the museum became one of only three percent of museums to achieve accreditation through the American Alliance of Museums, the highest national recognition afforded to American museums.

In 1924, a group of visionary local women artists came together to imagine the kind of city they wanted Jacksonville to be — the kind of community they wanted to live in and be a part of. At the core of their vision for a rich, vital, dynamic city were art, culture, and education. Thus, what we now call MOCA Jacksonville was born. From the beginning, MOCA has served the community and its visitors through exhibitions, educational programs, and publications designed to enhance an understanding and appreciation of art, with a current emphasis on works created from 1960 to the present.

More than a century later, MOCA’s mission remains focused on the art, artists, and ideas of our time, with a vision that unites education, creativity, and community building in the heart of downtown Jacksonville.
