The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens Announces an Important Gift from the Estate of Helen M. and Edward W. Lane, Jr.
18 New Works of Art to go on Display August 15, 2025
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — July 30, 2025 — The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is honored to announce the gift of 18 works of art from the estate of longtime museum supporters and community philanthropists Helen M. and Edward W. Lane, Jr. The works will be on display in a dedicated installation from August 15, 2025 – January 11, 2026 before being incorporated into other collection galleries, enhancing the museum’s renowned collection of more than 5,000 objects from ancient Egypt through the present day.
The Lanes shared a passion for collecting art, from the research to the hunt to sharing works with friends and family. The bequest to the museum includes 17 paintings and one sculpture by noted 19th- and 20th-century American and European artists. Highlights include works by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (Dutch/British, 1863-1912), Gustave Caillebotte (French, 1848-1894), Jean Dufy (French, 1888-1964), Frederick Childe Hassam (American, 1859-1935), Robert Henri (American, 1865-1929), Marie Laurencin (French, 1885-1956), Thomas Moran (American, 1837-1926), Grandma Moses, also known as Anna Mary Robertson (American, 1860-1961), Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917), and Louis Valtat (French, 1869-1952).
“Helen and Ed have been part of the museum family since our opening in 1961,” said Kimberly S. Noble, interim George W. and Kathleen I. Gibbs Director and CEO. “Their longstanding support of the Cummer Museum has been instrumental in making it Jacksonville’s landmark cultural institution, and this extraordinary gift, made possible through their estate planning, will be cherished for generations to come.”
“Mom and Dad thoroughly enjoyed acquiring and living with these paintings over many decades,” said their son, Edward. “My sisters, brother, and I are delighted that the art they so loved has found a home at the Cummer Museum.”
The couple, who had been married 56 years at the time of Ed’s passing in 2004, contributed greatly to the civic and cultural fabric of northeast Florida through their support of organizations including the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, Episcopal Children’s Services, Hubbard House, I.M. Sulzbacher, Junior League, St. Johns Cathedral, Salvation Army, United Way, the Community Foundation of Northeast Florida, Women’s Giving Alliance, and others.
