Jacksonville Symphony Hires New Flutist |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 7, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. Jacksonville Symphony Hires New Flutist What: The Jacksonville Symphony announces Sophia Jean as Second Flute/Piccolo for the upcoming 2025/26 Season. Bio: Sophia Jean is a flutist and recent graduate of the Yale School of Music, where she studied with Tara Helen O’Connor. She has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Virginia Symphony, Albany Symphony, New World Symphony and West Point Band. Festival appearances include fellowships at Music Academy of the West, Aspen Music Festival and Kent Blossom. A prizewinner in numerous competitions, Sophia won first place in the 2024 NFA Young Artist Competition, earning the Paul Taub Award for best performance of the commissioned work. She also received top prizes from the Chicago Flute Club and honorable mention in the 2024 Sphinx SOPA Competition. Sophia holds a dual degree in Flute Performance and Cognitive Science from Northwestern University and was awarded Yale’s Daniel Nyfenger Prize for excellence in woodwind playing. She is also an active teaching artist and arts advocate.
