City Year Jacksonville Kicks Off the School Year with New Class of Student Success Coaches City Year Jacksonville Celebrates 10th Anniversary with the Membership Class of 2023-2024

WHAT:

City Year Jacksonville announces its Opening Day kick-off event in celebration of its 10th anniversary and a new class of 70 Student Success Coaches who have committed to serving in Duval County Public Schools (DCPS). At a time when school districts across the nation are facing an unprecedented teacher staffing shortage and gaps in learning, these young leaders will serve for one year in 10 schools throughout Duval County — supporting students and strengthening school communities.

This year, City Year Jacksonville Student Success Coaches will provide elementary school students in third through fifth grade with mentorship and support in developing soft skills and academic achievement. This experience also develops problem-solving, decision-making, leadership and verbal communication skills for the Student Success Coaches; young people ages 18 to 25, many of which are from this community. Their year of service with City Year Jacksonville offers aid in identifying and equipping them for their next professional step all while they make a positive impact on students’ lives.

City Year Jacksonville celebrates the commitment of these young idealists at the City Year Opening Day celebration held on September 9 at the new Rutledge Pearson Elementary School. City Year Jacksonville’s theme for this year is “Driving Forward Together,” highlighting the importance of community engagement in driving a cycle of opportunity for young people to reach their full potential from childhood to young adulthood.

Media are invited to attend and learn more about the important work Student Success Coaches are doing to support students in Northeast Florida and the history of impact City Year Jacksonville has made serving in Jacksonville schools for the past decade. Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Dana Kriznar is the event’s keynote speaker and lunch will be provided.
