The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens Announces Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration: Honoring Coretta

 

Museum offers free admission on January 15 to commemorate MLK Day

 

JACKSONVILLE, Florida — The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens announced it will provide free admission and a full day of programming in commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 15, 2024. 

 

“The Museum is typically closed on Mondays. However, it is our honor to open the doors of the Museum on this special day for everyone to gather together and reflect on the extraordinary contributions of Dr. King and Coretta Scott King to the betterment of humanity,” said Dr. Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, the George W. and Kathleen I. Gibbs Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Museum. “We are grateful to all of our community partners for their continued support of this annual celebration.”

This year’s day of reflection at the Cummer Museum is supported by Presenting Sponsor, Bank of America; Legacy Sponsor, The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida’s Presidential Grants Program for the fifth-consecutive year; and Program Sponsor, Fidelity National Financial, Inc. The support from these generous sponsors allows the Museum to present the following full day of activities:

  • Screenings of “I Have a Dream” and “Dear Coretta” throughout the day

  • Self-guided scavenger hunt celebrating black artists

  • Prayer for Peace by
  • OneJax and Interfaith Campus Connect at 11:30 a.m. 
  •  
  •  
  •  
  • Performance by Jacksonville Arts & Music School (JAMS) Youth Chorus immediately following
  •  the prayer.

  •  
  •  
  • Live painting activity with Myah Freeman from noon to 3 p.m. 
  •  
  •  
  •  
  • Performance by the renowned Ritz Chamber Players at 1 p.m.
  •  

 

Tattoos in Japanese Prints from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, an exhibition organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and curated by Sarah Thompson (Curator, Japanese Art) has been extended through our Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration thanks to support from the Emily Balz Smith Foundation. 

 

The Cummer Shop and Cummer Café will also be open to the public on Monday, January 15, 2024. Reservations are recommended for the Cummer Café at www.cummermuseum.org/visit/cafe
